College of Humanities and Social SciencesDr Christine Kenney is the inaugural Professor of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) at 51本色, and Director of Te Toi Whakaruruhau o Aotearoa, the national Maori Disaster Risk Reduction Research Centre, which is supported by Toka T奴 Ake New Zealand Natural Hazards Commission. Her research within New Zealand, is also supported by multiple grants from central government, the Marsden Fund, and CoREs. She currenlty co-leads the rural research programme and other projects in the NSC Resilience to Natures Challenges programme, Marsden research on how m膩tauranga 惭腻辞谤颈 can inform disaster recovery in 惭腻辞谤颈 communities, and is apponted to MBIE's Special Extreme Weather Advisory Panel, which is allocating science funding to the Cyclone Gabrielle recovery process.
Professor Kenney has a dual background in disaster sociology and health, which has shaped her research and policy work on disaster risk reduction in relation to natural hazards, Indigenous Peoples, climate change, gender, health, terrorism and humanitarian issues. Her expertise encompasses leading projects in North America, China, and Australia, as well as New Zealand, and she regularly works with the World Health Organisation and United Nations agencies, notably UNDRR, UNESCO, and UNOCHA. Professor Kenney has recently chaired the UNDRR/International Science Council Disaster Science caucus, she is a lead-author on the United Nation’s 2022 Global Assessment Report, an informant to the 6th IPCC report, and the science representative on New Zealand’s Ministerial Committee on Emergency Management.
Professor Christine Kenney, is a 惭腻辞谤颈 sociologist and social science researcher in disasters. She has global expertise in implementing community-centred research with Indigenous peoples as well as policy projects with governments and local authorities in Canada, China, Australia and New Zealand. Christine's research currently focuses on identifying cultural factors that build community resilience to disasters; documenting Indigenous knowledges and practices that enhance community risk management and developing collaborative governance approaches to disaster risk reduction.
